There are currently 54 Serie A players who are positive for COVID-19, after Alex Meret and Kevin Malcuit tested negative.

The emergency situation at Napoli is beginning to calm down, as the vaccinated players are able to shake off the illness with relatively few if any symptoms and do so much quicker than with past variants.

Napoli announced via a statement that goalkeeper Meret and full-back Malcuit have both now tested negative, after Hirving Lozano and recently Victor Osimhen also made full recoveries.

That means only Kalidou Koulibaly – who is on international duty with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations anyway – Piotr Zielinski and Mario Rui still have COVID-19 in the Napoli squad.

With Roma and Fiorentina both reporting one new case today, there are now 54 Serie A players positive for COVID-19.

Comparatively, in the week from January 3 to 9, the Premier League announced 72 new positive cases between players and club staff.

A new protocol was confirmed today, so Serie A games will go ahead unless 35 per cent of the squad is positive for COVID-19.
