The situation is in chaos after Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
Coach Giampiero Ventura was fired and FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio resigned, while the Lega Serie B is already under a commissioner.
Today the CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) held a special meeting to discuss the situation and came to the conclusion new elections won’t be enough to resolve the Federation’s issues.
“There is a substantial and objective problem: this matter doesn’t just involve the CONI and sporting system, but the entire country and cannot be compared to any other Federation,” said Malagò in a Press conference.
“It is a flood that is sweeping everyone and everything up in its wake. It would be irresponsible to pretend nothing happened, especially for those who have a role in the institutions.
“My position is categorical: Italian football must be reformed, many things have to be changed and the only way to do that is to put it under a commissioner for a long time.
“The problem is profound and the roots run deep, starting from the Constitution, which prevents football reforms. The FIGC needs a commissioner, but the rules do not allow us to do that. If we had tried that before, someone might’ve appealed against it and probably won.”
The Lega Serie A will attempt to nominate a new President on Monday, while the Lega Serie B does so tomorrow.
“In football there are structural problems that go beyond people. There are nine slots to be fixed in the Lega Serie A and if it happens, good luck to calcio, we can’t do anything about that. If it doesn’t happen, then Serie A becomes a victim. Now they have the chance to prove they count.”
The deadline to find a new President is December 11, when Tavecchio's mandate expires, or the FIGC will have to be placed under a commissioner.
