Roma are close in on the signing of Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Arsenal on an initial loan deal with an option to buy.

José Mourinho expects new signings in the January transfer window and the versatile Arsenal man will likely be the first reinforcement for the Special One in the January transfer window.

According to Sky Sport, the player’s versatility is one of the reasons why the Giallorossi coach pushed for his signing.

Maitland-Niles can play as a centre midfielder, winger or full-back.

Roma hope to have Maitland-Niles available when Serie A resumes on January 6 after the break, but the 24-year-old tested positive for COVID last week, so he won’t leave the UK until he has recovered.

The Giallorossi will secure his services on a €500,000-700,000 loan with an option to buy for €10m.

Arsenal would want a higher option to buy, but the agreement between the two parties is close and the deal doesn’t seem in danger of collapsing.
