Fans and pundits react after Mike Maignan’s impressive performance in Liverpool vs. Milan in the Champions League, as Gianluigi Donnarumma continued on the Paris Saint-Germain bench.

The discussions regarding Italy international Gianluigi Donnarumma’s decision to move to PSG continued after Wednesday’s fixtures in the Champions League.

Champions League | Liverpool 3-2 Milan: Anfield thriller

But Milan are certain Maignan is the right replacement after the match against Liverpool this weekend.

The French shot stopper saved a Mo Salah penalty and did well to keep Milan in the game against Liverpool, but ultimately he couldn’t stop the Reds from claiming three points in a 3-2 win at Anfield.

In an interview with Tuttomercatoweb, former Rossoneri shot stopper Mario Ielpo claimed Maignan ‘gives an impression of guarding the goal even more than Donnarumma’, but pointed at his insecurity on the 2-2 goal, when Salah equalised one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Donnarumma benched by PSG in Champions League

La Gazzetta dello Sport claims Maignan has the qualities to grow further and enough personality to become a leader at San Siro.

‘Milan are in excellent hands’, the newspaper writes and highlights the Rossoneri know they can count on their new goalkeeper.

Maignan arrived from LOSC Lille after winning Ligue 1 last season and Donnarumma moved to France, where he has struggled to compete with Keylor Navas.

Donnarumma still waits for his debut in the Champions League, as Navas was preferred once again in the PSG goal.

Fans on Twitter reacted to the news of Donnarumma being benched for the opening game against Club Brugge, as PSG drew 1-1 against the Belgians in Bruges. “He could have worn the captain’s armband with his boyhood club.”

  1. Donnarumma made a massive mistake going there. You can see from a mile away that he went there for money. He will struggle to get into the team and subsequently cost him dearly as a player. In all fairness, I do not understand why PSG wanted to purchase him. He was great at the Euros and yet still on the bench. If I was him, I would give PSG the benefit of the doubt for this season but if Pocchettino still does not play him, then he should ask to leave there and come back to Italy. I do not think he will be welcomed back to Milan but there will be plenty other clubs that will take him provided he does not ask for too much money. At the end of the day, money isn’t everything.

  2. I think he went there expecting something different to the reality. There is a God tier squad there and Gigio keeps waxing lyrical about development and progress but how much progress can you make watching 9 out of 10 games from the bench? He has changed his way of life, left friends and family behind, moved to a new country where he doesn’t speak the language.. All for an extra – what – 2m euros? I personally think he’ll do a season or 2 in Paris and then move back to Italy. I believe he’s Neapolitan so Napoli would be unlikely but in the picture after he’s done making his money, a move back to Milan is an absolute no go, Juve definitely in with a shout if they can get rid of Szczesny.

  3. I have to admit concern over Gigio leaving . mike has stepped in and made management look like stars . But look at the long game . PSG may have a master play here and actually sell Gigio next year and make the money Milan should have .
He will end up at Juve , Man U , any club that is willing to pay big $ for a keeper . The real issue was his agent , i refuse to print his name .

  4. At pSG he make lees. He make 6 mil. Milan Ofer that idiot 7 plus Bono’s but Raiola pulled him from noise. B Raiola got 20m. Milan told him go.
This is all gift from Galiani. He itreduse Dallaramuna at Raiola. Go hell both of them
    Forza Milan.
