Matteo Messina Denaro, Italy’s most-wanted mafia boss arrested this morning in Palermo had attended a Serie A match between the Rosanero and Sampdoria in 2010.

Messina Denaro was arrested this morning at a private clinic in Palermo. He had been on the run for 30 years and was Italy’s most-wanted mafia boss.

In 2010, another mafia boss cooperating with Italian police revealed that Messina Denaro had attended a Serie A match between Palermo and Sampdoria at the Stadio Renzo Barbera with 35,000 other fans.

Messina Denaro was not too interested in the game, but according to multiple reports, he was at the stadium to meet other mafia bosses.

The game played on May 9, 2010, ended 1-1 with goals from Giampaolo Pazzini and Fabrizio Miccoli. Sampdoria, coached by Luigi Delneri, earned a Champions League spot that season.

Former Italy striker Salvatore Schillaci witnessed Messina Denaro’s arrest this morning as he was among the patients waiting for a medical check at the clinic Maddalena in Palermo.
