Federico Macheda will return to Manchester United to stay after his unsuccessful loan spell at Sampdoria.

Macheda joined the port club in January on loan in a bid to play regular football, but he was hampered by their struggles.

Doria, who sold Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini at the start of 2011, slid down the table and were eventually relegated to Serie B.

Macheda made 14 appearances in Serie A, for a total of 468 minutes, but failed to find the back of the net in the League.

There was a suggestion that Doria would keep Macheda in a bid to get them back into the top flight.

However, his agent, Giovanni Bia, has stated that the player will wear the red shirt of United again next term.

"Macheda will remain at Manchester United," the former Udinese defender told TMW on Monday afternoon.
