Lyon coach Grosso shows off stitches after Marseille attack

World Cup winner and Olympique Lyonnais coach Fabio Grosso showed he has not lost his smile even after needing 13 stitches to his face following an attack from Olympique Marseille fans.

The Lyon team bus was on its way to the Stade Velodrome last night when it was ambushed by a group of local supporters, who hurled objects including rocks, cans and fireworks to smash several windows.

Grosso was hit by one of the objects and also the flying glass, leaving him bloodied and in need of treatment.

The Ligue 1 match was called off and Marseille, whose coach is Grosso’s fellow Italy legend Gennaro Gattuso, condemned the violence.

Grosso was right back at work this morning and showed the damage inflicted by 13 stitches, but he has not lost his smile.

Straight after the match was called off and only Lyon fans remained in the stadium, Grosso and his players went out onto the pitch to salute them.
