Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri was linked with Roma and Napoli, but it seems he is close to joining Olympique Lyonnais instead.

There were already suggestions the Switzerland international was left out of tonight’s friendly against Osasuna because transfer talks were in progress.

L’Equipe then added that an offer had been made from Olympique Lyonnais for the player.

It remains to be seen whether they are on the verge of an agreement or not, as Liverpool’s €15m asking price had already put off Napoli and Roma.

Shaqiri turns 30 in October and his contract at Anfield only runs to the end of the current campaign.

He cost circa €15m to sign from Stoke City in 2018, before that playing for Inter in 2015.

The competition from Lyon makes it increasingly unlikely we will see a return to Serie A for Shaqiri, especially as Roma already missed out on his fellow Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka when failing to agree a fee with Arsenal.
