Lazio midfielder Senad Lulic has announced his retirement from the Bosnia & Herzegovina national team.

The 31-year-old was part of the squad which failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, and he has today announced that he will be unavailable for selection for future squads.

“Life decisions never come overnight, especially when it comes to love, like my love for Bosnia & Herzegovina and the shirt of the country I love,” Lulic wrote on Facebook.

“However, it’s time to say goodbye. After days and days of thinking and talking to my family and those closest to me, I’ve decided that my international career is over.

“I say this with a heavy heart, because I have invested my time, health and a tremendous amount of love fighting for the crest of my country.

“Sometimes it went bad, sometimes good, and the crowning moment of my career, like all of us, is going to the World Cup in Brazil.

“Sorrow remains that we did not repeat that success, but we have lost our way, and now it is time for the young, strong players to come through and learn from our mistakes.

“Some things could have been better, some things were perfect, and the only thing I have no regrets about is that I always did my best on the pitch.

“Thank you to all the coaches, the Federation, the fans – who travelled with us all over the world and who I am going to miss the most – the media, my teammates, all of them, who were part of my life, but it's time to go. I'm going to be the most loyal fan in the future.

“Since sometimes I’ve said some wrong things, or things I didn’t mean, I’d like to ask the media to accept my decision, which was taken after a long thought process.

“I've always had a good relationship with everyone in the Federation, and in the dressing room, that’s the past and this decision was made only because I felt it was time for new strength and new blood.

“Thank you all for giving me support, and having been with me all these years.”
