The Scudetto was secured on May 2, but they had to wait until the final game of the season, a 5-1 win over Udinese, to be presented the trophy.

“This year was wonderful for us, because we worked so hard to win this Scudetto. Last season he came really close, but this year we played well, were physically strong, we all made a big step forward,” Lukaku told DAZN.

“I am truly proud to play for this team.”

The Belgian was visibly moved to tears during the Serie A trophy ceremony and was embraced by his teammates, Lautaro Martinez and Nicolò Barella. He was also wearing a special personalised T-Shirt.

“I didn’t want to cry today, but the emotion was just too strong. This photo is of my grandmother and my grandfather, and I thought of them. When my grandfather died in 2005, I promised him I would win at least something in my career. I did that today and I am truly happy.”

Can this be the start of a new cycle of success for Inter?

“I hope it can be the start. Now I’ll go to the Euros with my country, then when we all return, we’ve got to be even stronger than before.”

He also concluded with the worst goal he’s scored in his career, as Alexis Sanchez’s cross-shot bounced off the woodwork and hit him.

“That goal shows you need quality and good luck! Look at my position, I was waiting for it there, I knew it was coming!”
