Lukaku returns to Cagliari with impressive record after racism incident

Romelu Lukaku looks set to earn his first start for on Sunday evening, when Napoli take on Cagliari at the Unipol Domus, where the Belgian was unfortunately subjected to racist abuse from the stands back in 2019. 

The Belgium international was met with monkey chants from supporters in the crowd while lining up to take a penalty late on against Cagliari for Inter back in the 2019-20 season. Similar incidents have occurred at several other grounds in the years since. 

Lukaku boasts impressive record against Cagliari

Despite the abuse that Lukaku has endured, he has responded with an impressive record away against Cagliari, netting in all three of his most recent visits. 

Lukaku has four goals from his last three matches away against Cagliari, grabbing a brace for Roma in a 4-1 win last season, and also scoring in each of his last two trips to Sardinia with Inter in 2020-21 and 2019-20.

The 30-year-old is expected to make his first Partenopei start on Sunday evening, having grabbed his first Napoli goal off the bench in the 2-1 victory over Parma on August 31, just before the international break. 

He is expected to the only change to Antonio Conte’s line-up, although official line-ups will be confirmed around 16.30 BST.
