Lukaku: ‘I am world class’

Romelu Lukaku pin-points what he and Cristiano Ronaldo ‘envy’ about each other, as the Belgium and Inter hitman complains he isn’t talked about as ‘world class,’ with the focus instead on form.

They go head-to-head in the Round of 16 between Belgium and Portugal on Sunday at 20.00 UK time.

“It was exceptional winning the Scudetto in a great season, but I don’t think Ronaldo’s presence really motivated me,” said the Inter forward in his press conference.

While the Nerazzurri took the Serie A title, Ronaldo was named Capocannoniere for a Juventus side that finished fourth in the Italian league with 29 goals.

“I have progressed a great deal, but always try to give more. Everyone talks about form, but I think it’s more that I have stepped up a level in my career and now I’m trying to make another step. The objective is to win the Euros with Belgium.

“When people talk about Robert Lewandowski, Karim Benzema or Harry Kane, they are called ‘world class’ – but when it comes to me, it’s just considered ‘good form.’

“That motivated me to work harder and get stronger. Now I believe that I belong in that list of world class players.”

Lukaku was asked what he envies of Ronaldo’s game and what CR7 would want to take from him.

“I’d like to have Ronaldo’s dribbling skills and his shot. I think he’d like my power and the way I play with my back to the goal.”

The 28-year-old scored 30 goals in 44 competitive games for Inter this season, along with 10 assists.

He netted 24 of those in 36 Serie A appearances, four in the Champions League and two in the Coppa Italia.

Lukaku is already Belgium’s top all-time scorer with 63 goals in just 96 senior caps for his country.
