Former striker Luis Figo reflected on his ‘most emotional’ day at Inter, the influence of Marcus Thuram and the impressive work of Simone Inzaghi.

The former Real Madrid and Portugal forward spent the final four years of his playing career with the Nerazzurri from 2005 to 2009, scoring 11 goals and providing 31 assists in 140 appearances across all competitions.

Inter are in a strange spot in the business end of the season; they already have won hand on their 20th ever Scudetto, but their Champions League exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid has seemingly dampened spirits in the Lombardy capital.

Speaking in the matchday programme via TMW, Luis Figo was first asked to recount some of his memories of his time at Inter.

“What has impressed me most about my years at Inter was the first time I played at San Siro, when I looked up and felt all those fans pushing us on, it was beautiful.

“The last match of my career, however, I think is the most emotional day of my entire footballing life.

“There are many emotions that I felt in the four seasons when I wore this shirt and all the trophies we won were also important.”

Luis Figo then commented on the work of Inzaghi’s Nerazzurri this season, irrespective of their Champions League exit.

“They’re a team that play good football and are having a very positive year. Thuram surprised me a lot with his impact and what he’s able to give, although I think their real strength is the squad and the contribution they all give on the pitch, all the players in the squad.”

Inter enter the 29th matchday with a 16-point lead over second place Milan, leaving them just a few matches away from securing their 20th ever Scudetto.
