Spain CT Luis Enrique said Italy are ‘at the top and deserved to win’ EURO 2020 this summer. ‘We have another opportunity to prove that we can win’.

The coach confirmed his squad for the clash with Italy in the UEFA Nations League, only three months after the semi-final defeat to the Azzurri on penalties.

Spain squad to face Italy: No Fabian Ruiz

Luis Enrique has left out Fabian Ruiz from the squad and Alvaro Morata is injured, confirming that Ferran Torres could play a false nine against Italy on October 6.

“They are at the top,” the former Barcelona coach said about the rematch against Italy on October 6. “They deserved to be champions and are continuing the streak of games unbeaten.

“As our psychologist says, the day will soon come when they lose. We play in a wonderful country and we have another opportunity to prove that we can win.

“We could have done it already at the European Championship and we weren’t able, now we’ll try again thinking that we can be the first to beat the European champions and the team that hasn’t lost in a lot of games.

“It’s a top-level team, with a similar philosophy to ours. I don’t know who will be called up, they have injuries, but I hope it’s a spectacular match.”

  1. The semi at the Euros was the ‘game of the tournament’. The two most skilled teams playing a high speed, technical game.

  2. Spain was the only team Italy really struggled to create chances with in the Euros. Won’t be surprised if their unbeaten streak comes to an end on Oct 6, but it’s been one heck of a run….
