Luis Alberto shocked fans by announcing live on television he has ‘already asked the club to terminate my contract’ so he can leave this summer. ‘I do not want one more Euro from Lazio.’

The midfielder had been close to leaving several times in recent years, only to always change his mind, but this time the situation seems to be different.

“The last few weeks have been difficult for me. I don’t know what the project is going to be, but I can say that I will certainly not be part of the project for next season,” he told DAZN straight after the final whistle of a 4-1 win over Salernitana.

“I already asked the club to terminate my contract, I do not want to take one more Euro from Lazio. I think it is only right now to step aside. This club has given me so much, but the time has come to step aside and leave it to others.”

The 31-year-old is under contract until June 2027, so it remains to be seen if he is asking for a transfer or simply terminating the deal early and leaving his wages on the table.

As part of his sale to Lazio for €4m in 2016, Liverpool are owed 30 per cent of his future transfer fee, so this may well be his way of helping the Aquile.

Luis Alberto has made 302 appearances in the Lazio jersey, contributing 51 goals and 76 assists.
