Monza centre-back Pablo Marì will undergo surgery today after a stabbing attack in a supermarket close to Milan on Thursday: ‘I was lucky, I saw one person die in front of me.’

The Arsenal loanee is among the five people wounded in a stabbing attack in the Milanofiori di Assago mall on the outskirts of Milan. He was taken to the hospital with a deep cut to his back which requires surgery.

Adriano Galliani and coach Raffaele Palladino visited him and according to Gazzetta, the Spanish centre-back will undergo surgery today.

“I was lucky because I saw a person die in front of me,” Marì told Gazzetta.

Marì was buying groceries with his wife and his child.

“I was pushing my trolley with my child in the seat. I felt tremendous pain in my back, and then that man stabbed another guy in the throat.”

Five more people were wounded and two are said to be in critical condition. One, a 30-year-old cashier, was killed in the attack.

Massimo Tarantino, a former Serie A defender for Napoli, Inter and Bologna, disarmed the assaulter, a 46-year-old Italian man with mental health issues.
