Former Inter and Juventus defender Lucio expected Antonio Conte to leave the Nerazzurri and says José Mourinho is the best coach he’s ever had.

The former Brazil international played with the Nerazzurri and the Bianconeri, but he had a better time in Milan than Turin.

Lucio won the Treble with José Mourinho at Inter, while he struggled with playing time at Juventus and left the club after just six months.

Antonio Conte was his coach at the Allianz Stadium. The Italian tactician, who has now been linked with the Newcastle job, left Inter in the summer after winning the Serie A title.

“Inter are rebuilding, it’s normal to have economic problems after the pandemic, but the most important thing is to get over them,” Lucio told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“That’s why I am not surprised by Conte’e exit, nobody can know what he thought after his farewell. Now we are discovering Inzaghi and his desire to play good football.”

The former Brazilian defender admits he didn’t have a great time at Juventus and that Inter remain his favourite team in Italy.

“I was also obliged to leave Inter, because they were rebuilding, I didn’t have people who could give me advice and I didn’t have many options,” the 43-year-old admitted.

“I found three defenders of the Italy national team in Turin, it wasn’t an easy moment and I don’t have good memories, that’s why Inter are my team in Italy.”

How does it feel to see José Mourinho sitting on the bench of a Serie A club which is not the Inter one?

“It could seem strange for those who lived many strong emotions with him, but that’s part of the job,” said Lucio.

“He is the best coach I’ve ever had. He is tough, but also coherent and correct, he never wants to lose and Roma picked the right man to return to the top.”
