Parma captain Alessandro Lucarelli laments ‘everything we’ve done has been in vain’ and hits out at the Lega Serie A.

The Ducali were declared bankrupt this afternoon, after a final deadline passed without a buyer, meaning the club will be forced to start again from the amateur leagues.

“To buy Parma would have taken €22.5m,” Lucarelli told reporters outside the courtroom, where the verdict was confirmed.

“The question mark the two groups [fronted by Mike Piazza and Giuseppe Corrado] had was what might fall on their shoulders, without guarantees from the administrators and the FIGC they pulled back.

“Should we have refused to play? It’s easy to make judgements in retrospect, if we’d have stopped to months ago then we’d have been bankrupt two months ago, taking away any hope for Parma.

“We wanted to play to give Parma a chance to survive, Serie D is a failure for everyone’s interests.

“Everything we’ve done has been in vain, and that’s my biggest disappointment.

“The Federation? I’m sure they’ve had a lot of pressure from other teams with an interest in Parma failing. What [President Carlo] Tavecchio told us was confirmed though, because the €5m [emergency fund] wasn’t included in the sporting debt.

“It was a promise kept, I’m not trying to defend Tavecchio, because I don’t care, but he spoke with us.

“The Lega were more ambiguous, and don’t forget who created all this.

“There are those who did wrong, in bad faith, and we’re paying for the sins of others.”

The defender did not rule out staying with the Crociati for next season, even though they’ll be in the amateur divisions.

“It’s not the time to talk about what Lucarelli will do, although the availability is there. We have to talk about what has happened, it’s been a disarming and disastrous year.”
