Sami Khedira admits there is ‘a lot of competition’ for a midfield place at Juventus, and reveals he’s been doing extra training.

The 28-year-old missed most of last season with an injury, and has been working with a personal trainer over the summer to get back up to speed.

“I haven’t played many competitive games since March,” Khedira reminded journalists at his official presentation.

“It was important for me to arrive here on a good physical level. I’ve worked hard to prevent injuries, increase strength and give 100 per cent.

“I must say, I feel very good physically. I’ve been working with a personal training for the last two weeks of my holiday. I’m very happy, I feel good.

“Of course, I came here to play, but the role of starter is not going to be given to me, I have to work. There are great players in this midfield.

“The midfield in particular is very strong in this team, there’s a lot of competition, but my ambition is to measure myself against these players, withstand the pressure and secure a starting spot.”

The Bianconeri reached the Champions League final last year, losing to Barcelona in Berlin, and Khedira believes they have the ability to get there again.

“There are a lot of contributing factors involved in winning the Champions League. You need a good team, and there are seven or eight teams in Europe that can compete for that goal.

“There are also other factors, physical condition, luck – many variables which can have an effect. There can also be surprises, sometimes there are surprises in the Champions League.

“I think this team can really get to the highest point in Europe again. I think it’s one of the top four teams in Europe, but it’s difficult, every year teams are getting stronger.

“My philosophy has always been to play to the maximum to achieve every possible goal. It’s hard to win everything, but that’s our goal.”

The World Cup winner will wear the number 28 shirt for his new club, and briefly explained his reasoning.

“The number 28 was my number at Stuttgart, which was my first club,” Khedira revealed.

“I’m fond of this number.”
