Lazio President Claudio Lotito said they are ‘writing an important page in the history’ of the club in tonight’s Champions League Round of 16 against Bayern Munich.

It kicks off at the Allianz Arena at 20.00 GMT.

Ciro Immobile converted a penalty to win the first leg 1-0, so with no away goals rule now in UEFA tournaments, any defeat by a one-goal margin would lead to extra time.

If Lazio can simply avoid defeat, they will be in the Champions League quarter-finals after a 24-year absence.

“We are playing for an important page in the sporting history of Lazio, to compensate the affection and love shown every day by the fans,” Lotito told Sky Sport Italia and Sport Mediaset.

“So I hope the team plays with that ferocity, determination and team spirit to repay the fans and write an important page in the history of this club.”

Lotito made the unusual step of flying with the team to Munich and staying in the same hotel.

“The fact I am here after nine years and not in the best health shows how important this game is for Lazio and its fans. We want to bring Lazio to the Olympus of European football.

“There are the conditions to continue growing this project.”

The pitch-side reporter at Sky Sport Italia explained that during the warm-up, Immobile went around to every single teammate and spoke to them individually, which he does not usually do.

This match comes days after the chaotic 1-0 Serie A defeat to Milan, which saw Lazio reduced to eight men, and today it was confirmed that Matteo Guendouzi received a two-match ban, with Luca Pellegrini and Adam Marusic suspended for one.

“Everyone who saw the match can express their own judgment and consider if those are compatible sanctions with what actually happened. We will lodge our appeal and have our voices heard,” concluded Lotito.
