Lazio President Claudio Lotito assures coach Maurizio Sarri is not preparing to walk away. ‘He just spoke in a moment of dejection’ after their 5-1 Europa League defeat.

The Biancocelesti had started their campaign on the right foot with a 4-2 victory over Feyenoord, but then crumpled to a 5-1 loss in Denmark against Midtjylland.

This prompted some angry and disconcerted comments from Sarri in his press conference, suggesting he was ready to leave if he was the problem causing these ‘emotional collapses’ in the team.

“Sarri is not leaving, he will stay in his role, there are no doubts,” President Lotito told Il Messaggero newspaper.

“He just spoke in a moment of dejection. The problem at Lazio needs to be resolved, once and for all, and straight away.

“Just think that once again, in order to motivate everyone, I had paid the October salary in advance.”

Lazio are back in action in Serie A on Sunday with a trip to newly-promoted Cremonese.

Despite Lotito’s assurances, Il Messaggero continue to report that Sarri is increasingly concerned at the lack of progress in this squad and could walk away if there was another humiliating setback.

Manuel Lazzari and Mattia Zaccagni are still out injured this weekend, though Danilo Cataldi returns from his one-match ban.
