Lazio President Claudio Lotito admits he didn’t expect Maurizio Sarri’s resignation and claims the Tuscan tactician ‘was betrayed.’

Lazio confirmed Sarri’s resignation on Wednesday, while his staff stepped down the following day leaving Giovanni Martusciello in charge at the Stadio Olimpico.

Sarri was under contract until June 2025 but still decided to leave, surprising club owner Lotito.

“Sarri was betrayed,” Lazio’s President told TG1 on Thursday.

“His farewell was not in the air, it was surprising. He was betrayed by the behaviour of certain people. There is something creepy inside the group. A team that beats Bayern Munich and loses to Udinese. Ask yourself a question.”

Lotito clarified that Martusciello’s tenure isn’t deadline-bound, even if reports in Italy suggest he will soon meet with ex-Hellas Verona coach Igor Tudor.

“The team needs a coach that uses the carrot and the stick,” continued Lotito.

“They [players] have no more, they can no longer put the blame on the others.”
