Lazio President Claudio Lotito has admitted that he pushed until the very end of the transfer window to sign controversial Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood before he joined LaLiga side Getafe on loan on deadline day.

Lotito briefly touched on the Greenwood topic during a recent interview with Laziosiamonoi.it, revealing that Greenwood wanted to play for the Biancocelesti and that it was an issue on Man United’s end that prevented him from being signed.

He told the Lazio-focussed publication: “I tried until the end, they didn’t sign the documents in time. He wanted to come to Lazio.”

Greenwood was suspended by United in January 2022 after being accused of sexual and violent crimes and has not played competitively since his arrest by police in the United Kingdom.

The criminal charges were dropped in February of 2023 following the “withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light.”

United had reportedly begun the process of reintegrating Greenwood back into the squad, but later backpedalled on that decision, eventually telling the player that his future would be spent away from Old Trafford.

On September 1, Greenwood officially joined Getafe on loan until the end of the 2023-24 season.
