Lazio president Claudio Lotito explained why he decided to hire Maurizio Sarri following the departure of Simone Inzaghi last year.

The 63-year-old Italian coach has had a decent start to life in the Italian capital with the Biancocelesti, bringing the team to 5th in the Serie A table last season. Things have continued going well this year, even if slip ups like the 5-1 loss to FC Midjylland and 0-0 draw with Sampdoria have occurred.

Speaking to Leggo, Lotito discussed his decision to appoint Sarri following Inzaghi’s departure from Lazio and the project in the Italian capital.

‘We understood each other immediately. I didn’t know him, but he immediately made a great impression on me. As I’ve already said, Sarri is a person who lives for football.

“That’s why I entrusted him with a wide-ranging project, which I feel is showing its full potential even in these first few days of the season, which bode well for this second year. After Inzaghi’s departure, we chose a coach in line with our ambitions.

“Not a transitional coach, but one capable of starting a new project immediately. I evaluated many good coaches, more or less renowned. I chose not to settle. I didn’t pick a just name, I chose an idea of football.”

Since his arrival in Rome, Sarri has averaged 1.66 points per match across his 56 matches. His system still allows star players like Ciro Immobile and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to shine and the team are hoping to fight for a top four finish this season, hoping their summer arrivals will make the difference.

  1. Maybe Lotito can give some pointers to Agnelli who’s clueless on how to build a modern football club.

  2. Maybe lotito can explain what unknown players he brought in during the summers and why all of them are warming the bench?
