Lazio director Enrico Lotito admitted the club aren’t thrilled about the idea of facing Bayern Munich in the Champions League Round of 16, but noted his side ‘will still fight to the end’.
The Biancocelesti finished second in Group E behind Atletico Madrid, achieving one of their objectives of the season by progressing to the knockout stages of Europe’s premier club competition.
The last time Lazio were in the Champions League, they also drew Bayern in the Round of 16 and fell 6-2 on aggregate. The Bavarian giants currently sit second in the Bundesliga, sitting four points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen with a game in-hand.
Speaking to Sport Mediaset via TMW, Lotito reacted to Lazio’s Champions League Round of 16 draw with Bayern.
“Bayern Munich are one of the worst teams that we could’ve drawn. But we’re here on merit, we’ll fight until the end to have our say.”
The Lazio director then spoke about how the team have looked vastly different in Serie A compared to the Champions League.
“In Serie A we’re not doing well, the team must do better to climb the table. In Europe, however, things have gone well so far, and we will try to repeat ourselves, even if we have an opponent who are experts in this competition ahead of us. Against Bayern, anyway, we’ll try.”
Lazio currently sit 11th in the Serie A table after 16 matches, picking up 21 points from six wins and three draws.
It couldn’t really have gone much better for Lazio – would Madrid, City, Arsenal, Barcelona been any better? At this stage of the competition, Lazio are cannon fodder. I suppose Real Sociedad would have been the best alternative but Inter couldn’t beat them either.
Laziale da tempi remoti,e laziale puro nonché Sabino, mi chiedo: ma Lotito ancora temporeggia ad acquistare tre giocatori che dovrebbero fare la base della squadra, 2 attaccanti che facciano gol minimo 15/20 ognuno, ed un vero regista della difesa , che l’attuale fa ridere , è come una barca che fa acqua a prua e poppa! Ma come affronti il Bayern Monaco? Con questa squadra , perdiamo sia all’Olimpico, sia a casa loro, né sono certo.
