Cagliari Coach Diego Lopez – former teammate of Davide Astori – was taken ill in shock after news of the Fiorentina defender’s death.

Lopez had played alongside Astori in Sardinia and Cagliari were warming up for today’s planned 11.30 GMT Serie A match with Genoa at Marassi when news spread.

Several players who had worked with the 31-year-old left the field in tears, including Italy and Genoa goalkeeper Mattia Perin.

According to news agency Ansa, Cagliari Coach Lopez took it particularly hard and had to be receive treatment from the medical staff.

Astori played for Cagliari from 2008 to 2014, while Lopez was in the squad from 1998 to 2010.

The Fiorentina captain was found dead this morning in his hotel room in Udine, where the team was staying ahead of today’s game with Udinese.

It is believed he suffered cardiac arrest due to natural causes.
