Diego Lopez still believes Brescia can avoid the drop after their point at Fiorentina and reveals Mario Balotelli could return to training. ‘Mario said I was right.’

The Rondinelle are still rock bottom, but gave the Viola a real scare at the Stadio Franchi, as Alfredo Donnarumma’s penalty was cancelled out by a German Pezzella header.

“It was a good performance, especially in the first half, as we timed the counter-attacks well and stayed focused,” Lopez told Sky Sport Italia.

“We should’ve passed the ball quicker after the break, instead we allowed Fiorentina to create more scoring opportunities. We were coming off so many defeats before the lockdown, it’s natural that the thoughts go to hanging on to a point.

“At least this moves us a little further forward, even if just one point, but it’s important as a confidence booster. We need that ahead of what is a Final against Genoa on Saturday.”

Balotelli was frozen out during the last few weeks, but he had his COVID-19 swab today, suggesting he could soon be welcomed back into the squad.

“He needs time,” explained Lopez. “The team worked really well in training and when he returns, Mario will need to do exactly the same thing.

“I talked to him, it’s the first day we really met since the lockdown. I told him all the same things I said in the media, but everyone is in charge of their own destiny. We’re all grown-ups, I am a coach for 25 players and not just him.

“Mario said I was right. We talked about everything and I do want to defend him, but right now the group has taken one path and he has taken another.”
