Ruben Loftus-Cheek revitalised his career at Milan and hopes he can ‘maybe’ break back into the England squad after Gareth Southgate’s departure.

The 28-year-old has 10 senior caps for England, making his debut all the way back in November 2017, but the most recent appearance was in November 2018.

He had ambitions of getting into the side for EURO 2024 after a strong season at Milan, where he scored 10 goals and provided two assists in 40 competitive games.

“It was good to be a fan of England over the summer and I watched them on their journey even though I wasn’t part of the squad,” Loftus-Cheek told reporters.

“It was good to be a part of the nation and the culture during a major tournament. We almost got over the line, but it wasn’t to be. For me, I played for England before and have friends there, so I definitely wanted them to succeed.

“We were so close this time. Maybe next time who knows, maybe I can be in the squad for that one.”

England snubbed Loftus-Cheek and Serie A players

Much like Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori and Chris Smalling, Loftus-Cheek was ignored by Southgate when playing in Italy.

England have reached the last two European Championship finals, but were beaten by Italy in 2021 and Spain this summer.

With Milan in the Champions League again this season, the former Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Fulham midfielder will be hoping to impress whoever steps into the role of England manager following the departure of Southgate.
