Fernando Llorente says Gennaro Gattuso didn’t trust him and confirms he was close to returning to Athletic Bilbao.

The Spaniard joined Udinese from Napoli in the January transfer window.

“I was on good terms with Gattuso, the problem was he didn’t trust me,” the former Juventus striker told Cadena Ser.

“Napoli signed many forwards after I arrived. I wanted to stay but I was in a place where they had no confidence in me.

“I had a good feeling with [Antonio] Conte. I won the first trophies in my career with him. I like him as a coach.”

This past January, Llorente was close to returning to Athletic Bilbao.

“I had two options, Sampdoria or Athletic, and I had to make a quick decision. A move to Athletic was my priority, but after I spoke to their sporting director, I understood it was not possible to return.”
