According to reports in Italy, Arthur Melo was second choice for Liverpool on transfer deadline day, as they had first asked Juventus for Denis Zakaria, who ended up at Chelsea.

The Bianconeri were able to get rid of two of the midfielders who were surplus to requirements in the final hours of the summer transfer window.

Arthur moved to Liverpool on loan for €4m with an option to buy for a further €37.5m.

A few hours later, Zakaria completed his transfer to Chelsea – although it wasn’t announced until 1am UK time and he had his medical tests in Turin – on loan for €3m with option to buy for €28m plus €5m in bonuses.

According to Calciomercato.com, Liverpool had originally requested Zakaria, but could not agree a deal with the club or the player.

Instead, they turned to their Plan B, which was Brazilian midfielder Arthur, and quickly worked out a transfer.

6 thought on “Liverpool wanted Zakaria rather than Arthur from Juventus”
  1. They couldn’t agree a deal with the cheaper option, so they went for the more expensive one? Makes sense.

  2. You make deals based on the valuation of players not on how much money you have!
