Inter seem determined to keep Mateo Kovacic, so Liverpool could go for teammate Hernanes instead.

The Nerazzurri have been investing heavily on their midfield over the summer, buying Geoffrey Kondogbia from Monaco and expected to sign Giannelli Imbula from Olympique Marseille too.

This means someone has to go in the current squad and until now Kovacic was the favourite, but Liverpool baulked at the €30m asking price.

Instead, the Daily Express and Tuttomercatoweb claim that Inter asked if the Reds would be interested in his teammate Hernanes.

The Brazilian former Lazio star just turned 30 last month and only recently found his form at San Siro in a new tactical role.

He prefers to play behind the strikers or in a deeper central role and in 26 Serie A games this season scored five goals, providing four assists.

Hernanes arrived from Lazio in January 2014 for €18m and is well known for his acrobatic backflip goal celebration.
