Andrea La Mantia’s diving header was the decisive moment at the Stadio Artemio Franchi this evening.
“Coming to Florence is not easy for anyone, so the team knew they’d have to suffer and deal with a few chances,” he told DAZN.
“The disappointment was the start, as we had too timid an approach to the game and only really started moving the ball around after 15-20 minutes.
“In football you can be under pressure, but you’ve also got to make the opposition track back. We can’t think of coming here and not allowing Fiorentina a single scoring opportunity, but we did well to keep a clean sheet and could’ve scored more on the counter-attack.
“I didn’t feel the need to clam up or put on more defenders, because aside from Dusan Vlahovic, Fiorentina didn’t have much of a strong presence in the box. I tried putting on an extra defender when we had the lead with Sassuolo and conceded a goal, so the team is accustomed to these tactics and there’s no need to mess it up.
“What we really need to do is work on not losing the ball cheaply playing out from the back, because that is when we’re wide open and concede stupid goals.”
Lecce one of the best away records in the division, with three away victories, two draws and three losses. It’s remarkable considering they are still without a win at home.
“Organisation, ideas, the desire to amaze are all keys to this Lecce. Many of these players had only ever seen Serie A on television. I told them, we earned our promotion to Serie A, now we have to prove that we deserve to be here.”
Khouma Babacar came off the bench and wasted two glorious chances against his former club.
“Babacar had a lightning recovery and was simply not in good enough shape for this game. Having said that, he needs to be more determined, he has to have that killer instinct in front of goal. A player like him cannot shoot like that when clear on goal, he has to put his foot through it.
“I told him, he needs to increase the intensity of his training sessions and get into shape.”
