Lecce boss Fabio Liverani believes only his side tried to “play football” in the 2-2 draw with Cagliari.

Lecce came back from 2-0 down to salvage a draw at the Via del Mare in Monday’s rearranged fixture, and Liverani criticised Cagliari’s approach to the game.

“Today we played football, creating 10 chances, whilst our goalkeeper didn’t even make half a save,” he said afterwards.

“Their penalty was a half-penalty, which could be given with VAR, and a counterattack.

“Since the third matchday, we’ve been outside of the relegation zone and that’s the way I would like to keep it until the end of the season. That’s the objective.”

The Salentini have now suffered just one defeat in their last six games, although they haven’t won during that time…

“Except for the Atalanta game, we have done very well, even today we didn’t deserve to lose.

“We suffered for periods during the game, but we continued to play in our style and never threw away possession.”

Gianluca Lapadula was sent off along with Robin Olsen after he appeared to headbutt the goalkeeper, but the former Lazio midfielder disagreed.

“I don’t understand why Olsen fell to the ground.”
