Fabio Liverani was the most critical of the decision to play behind closed doors amid the Coronavirus outbreak, but the Lecce coach accepts it now that “everyone is affected the same way.”

While over the last couple of weeks some Serie A games were played with no restrictions, others meant to be behind closed doors only to then be postponed, the Government decree has now forced all sporting events in Italy behind closed doors until at least April 3.

While over the last couple of weeks some Serie A games were played with no restrictions, others meant to be behind closed doors only to then be postponed, the Government decree has now forced all sporting events in Italy behind closed doors until at least April 3.

“What we are going through is certainly an emergency situation for the whole country,” Liverani told the official Lecce website.

“It is an extraordinary event and we must follow the indications closely. As professionals, we are trying to keep the focus on our football.”

Lecce won’t play again until March 15 against Milan, as their Week 26 game with Atalanta went ahead normally last week.

“Football is a sport that comes alive with emotion, passion and a packed stadium. When a decision affects everyone the same way, it has to be accepted in its positives and negatives, realising that prevention comes first and foremost.

“Over the next four rounds, we’ll be up against Milan, Juventus, Sampdoria and Sassuolo. In those fixtures, we got four draws in the first half of the season.

“We’ll try to prepare it one game at a time, well aware we’ll need more than four points from that run to secure our Serie A safety.”
