The Azzurri opened their campaign with Thursday’s disappointing 2-1 home defeat to England, breaking several records, including their first loss in a European Championship qualifier since 2006.

They have won all eight previous meetings with Malta, home and away, scoring 21 goals and conceding two. Malta, who are coached by former Chievo midfielder Michele Marcolini, started their group losing 2-1 in North Macedonia.

The group is completed by Ukraine.
