Marcello Lippi believes Milan, Napoli and Inter are the contenders for the Serie A title this season, while Juventus should ‘focus on the Champions League.’
The situation going into the break for international duty sees both Napoli and Milan top of the table, the only clubs in Europe’s main five leagues who are still unbeaten, followed by Inter in third place.
“Milan and Napoli have had a fantastic start to the season, but they have to keep Inter in mind too,” 2006 World Cup winner Lippi told Sky Sport Italia.
“I don’t know about Juventus, they might’ve considered the situation and decided to focus on the Champions League.
“If that is what they have done, I’m sure the Bianconeri would be more than happy to take seventh in Serie A as long as they won the Champions League trophy.”
Milan had also been Winter Champions last season, only to capitulate in the second half of the campaign to Antonio Conte’s Inter.
“Stefano Pioli has really impressed me with his work, especially as he has Milan playing beautiful football. The difficulties in the Champions League are largely because he and the players are unaccustomed to European football at this level.
“Pioli reminds me of Carlo Ancelotti and that is a real compliment.”
Luciano Spalletti returned to Serie A for Napoli this summer, two years after he was sacked by Inter, despite securing a top four finish.
“Spalletti had a paid vacation for two years,” smiled Lippi.
“He seems calmer, more reflective, ready to dialogue with others, along with the usual competence. He hasn’t forgotten how to do the job.”
