Lippi: ‘Allegri won’t just be reheated soup’

World Cup winner Marcello Lippi seems sure Massimiliano Allegri’s second stint at Juventus will be a success. ‘At this level, a stop is good. You enrichen yourself’.

The Scudetto streak stopped at nine years for the Old Lady and they decided to bring back Allegri ahead of the 2021-22 season.

Lippi thinks the Bianconeri did well to try new paths, but expects the man from Livorno to deliver upon his return to Continassa.

“Other than a heated soup, it will be delicious seconds,” Lippi told la Gazzetta dello Sport. “At this level, a stop after a long cycle is good.

“You relax, you study new tactics and coaches, and you enrichen yourself. The team is strong and he knows it well. They arrive from two delicate years.

“Juventus tried new paths, with a coach who is not very experienced but wise and prepared. It was right to try. They didn’t make it and now they decided to go back to winning: there’s no one who could play this role better than Max.”

The former Azzurri CT spoke about himself returning to Juve after two years and revealed he has a soft spot for Cristiano Ronaldo, who seems set to stay at the Allianz Stadium beyond the summer.

“Look, I too returned to Juve after two years and won two Scudetti, plus playing another Champions League Final,” he continued and pointed at Ronaldo.

“I have always thought that Ronaldo is the best goalscorer in the world. He doesn’t create them, but he finishes them.

“It’s important that the team offers him a lot. He has never been a true centre-forward, he has always needed a No. 9 like [Karim] Benzema next to him, but Juve don’t have this No. 9.

“I imagine Allegri will make him play with two other strikers, in a system of overlaps and positional changes that will not give the defences any reference points.”
