This is the first match in charge for Ranieri, as Eusebio Di Francesco was fired following six defeats in seven Serie A games.

Curiously, Ranieri had also replaced the same Coach at Roma back in March and now makes his debut facing his beloved hometown club.

To add a further twist of fate, today is also Ranieri’s 68th birthday.

Karol Linetty is injured, but Ranieri changes the tactics to a 4-3-1-2 formation with Emiliano Rigoni rather than Gaston Ramirez supporting Manolo Gabbiadini and Fabio Quagliarella.

Albin Ekdal was expected to step into midfield, but in a shock twist, Ranieri gives Bertolacci a debut from the start.

Bertolacci only signed on for Samp as a free agent on October 8, as he was out of contract with Milan and has not played for since a 5-2 Europa League win over Dudelange on November 29, 2018.

Roma have a lengthy absentee list, missing Edin Dzeko (who is not risked with a protective face mask after surgery on a facial fracture two weeks ago), Lorenzo Pellegrini, Davide Zappacosta, Cengiz Under, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Amadou Diawara.

Alessandro Florenzi returns after a virus that saw him lose a couple of kgs and miss out on international duty, but he is moved to a wide left role in the supporting trident with Nicolò Zaniolo and Justin Kluivert.

Kalinic is the only real remaining option as centre-forward, hoping for better after his last-gasp goal was disallowed against Cagliari.

Because of that incident and the consequent protests, Roma Coach Paulo Fonseca is suspended and sits in the stands.

Sampdoria: Audero; Bereszynski, Murillo, Colley, Murru; Vieira, Bertolacci, Jankto; Rigoni; Gabbiadini, Quagliarella

Roma: Pau Lopez; Spinazzola, Mancini, Smalling, Kolarov; Veretout, Cristante; Kluivert, Zaniolo, Florenzi; Kalinic
