The main motivation is “city supremacy,” as Genoa boss Gian Piero Gasperini put it, and there are few local derbies as bitter as this one.

Only three points separate them in the table and the Grifone are determined to stay in front of their neighbours.

Genoa also want to get back on track after a 3-2 thriller of a defeat to Roma last week, but Alessio Cerci and Mattia Perin are out for the rest of the season.

Suso supports centre-forward Pavoletti in attack with Cristian Ansaldi one to watch for his pace on the wing.

Sampdoria have Nenad Krsticic suspended, Niklas Moisander and Carlos Carbonero on the treatment table.

Quagliarella is back in the Blucerchiati shirt and can’t wait to make his mark in the Derby della Lanterna alongside the always unpredictable Cassano.

When these sides met in January, Samp emerged 3-2 winners, but Genoa haven’t won the derby since a 3-0 hammering in September 2013.

That was followed by three Samp victories and a draw.

This will be the 112th Derby della Lanterna.
