Nainggolan completed his loan move from Inter last week, but because the transfer window only opened officially on Monday, he had to wait until today for his ‘debut’ – in his third different stint at Cagliari.

Charalampos Lykogiannis is suspended, with Diego Godin, Marko Rog, Adam Ounas, Andrea Carboni and Paolo Faragòinjured.

Alessandro Tripaldelli therefore steps in at left-back, with Nahitan Nandez, Joao Pedro and Riccardo Sottil supporting Leonardo Pavoletti, preferred to Giovanni Simeone.

Benevento were disappointed to lose 2-0 on Sunday against Milan, especially as the Rossoneri were down to 10 men for an hour and Gianluca Caprari missed a penalty.

Luca Caldirola, Iago Falque, Gaetano Letizia and Gabriele Moncini miss out, but Christian Maggio returns for a spot on the bench.

It means Riccardo Improta has to improve as a full-back, while former Cagliari forward Marco Sau is supported by Roberto Insigne and Gianluca Lapadula.

Cagliari: Cragno; Zappa, Ceppitelli, Walukiewicz, Tripaldelli; Marin, Caligara; Nandez, Nainggolan, Joao Pedro; Pavoletti

Benevento: Montipò; Improta, Tuia, Glik, Barba; Hetemaj, Schiattarella, Ionita; R Insigne, Lapadula; Sau
