The wing-back looked to be on the verge of leaving the Bianconeri earlier this season, and was left out of the Champions League squad.

It was assumed that the Swiss international would move on when his contract expired in the summer, but the 33-year-old has instead committed his future to the club for another 12 months.

“Juventus Football is pleased to announce that wing-back Stephan Lichtsteiner has renewed his Juventus contract until 30 June 2018 in a deal that will extend his black and white journey into at least its seventh year,” a statement announced.

“Lichtsteiner’s contributions over the past five and a half seasons have irrevocably rewritten the club’s history books, the Swiss defender one of six current Juve stars to have played a part in every one of the Old Lady's five consecutive league titles.

“Stephan has gone from strength to strength, making a further 161 appearances for the club, scoring 13 times and making 19 assists from open play, more than any other defender since the beginning of the 2011/12 season.

“And now, with at least another year and a half of service and the chance to become a true club legend on the way, the Swiss Express shows no signs of letting up.”

The announcement completes Lichtsteiner’s rehabilitation in the squad, as it was confirmed yesterday that he has been added to the Champions League list.
