Licthsteiner retired at the age of 36 this month and the former Switzerland captain can look back at an illustrious career, including seven Scudetti, four Coppa Italia and three Supercoppa Italiana during his time at Juventus.

The former Bianconero admitted he was ‘surprised’ by the announcement of Pirlo as the new Juventus coach, but claims ‘it’s an excellent choice’.

“The news surprised me, but only for a couple of seconds,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “It’s an excellent choice, Andrea has enormous credibility.

“He will succeed to manage the group. He’s calm, nice and knows the environment. He reminds me of [Real Madrid coach Zinedine] Zidane, certainly not [Inter coach Antonio] Conte or [Atletico Madrid coach Diego] Simeone.

“He will scream when needed. It only matters that he has a good impact on the group. I have no doubts about that.”

Pirlo will be presented at a press conference at 14.00 UK time today.
