Stephan Lichtsteiner says Juventus must keep close to Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling when the two sides face in the Champions League next week.

The Old Lady open their European campaign with an away trip to the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, and the Switzerland international thinks they can repeat their successful run to the final last year.

“Sterling is a great player – you can never leave him too much space because he’s so quick and good at one-on-ones,” the full-back told Tuttosport.

“Sterling is a great player – you can never leave him too much space because he’s so quick and good at one-on-ones,” the full-back told Tuttosport.

“It’s important to keep him as close as possible.

“As we have learned, it’s not at all easy to play in the Champions League. I think that City have a team that is well equipped to have a great season, but in football it’s not enough just to have a strong squad as it’s always difficult to win.

“Having said that, City have everything needed to do well.

“Can Juventus repeat themselves in Europe? Of course and we must believe it, but this year will certainly be more difficult because after the final last year, everyone now knows about us and is expecting us.

“How do I explain this difficult start to the season That’s football. Against Udinese we had six or seven clear scoring chances, they have had one and we were punished.”
