Robert Lewandowski explains why he voted for Chelsea and Italy midfielder Jorginho to win FIFA’s The Best award. ‘The year for him was insane.’

The Brazil-born player who has been in Italy since he was a young teenager had the most successful 2021 of anyone, winning the Champions League and European Supercup with Chelsea, then UEFA EURO 2020 with the Azzurri.

Everyone had to give their top three players for the award in order, and Bayern Munich and Poland hitman Lewandowski chose Jorginho, followed by Lionel Messi and ex-Juventus striker Cristiano Ronaldo.

“I always look at offensive players, but what Jorginho won means a lot,” Lewandowski told Goal.com.

“You have to remain neutral. He also scored important goals despite being a number six.

“The year for him was insane with Chelsea and Italy.”

Despite that vote, Jorginho ended up sixth in the final tally on 24 points, well behind Lewandowski, Messi and Ronaldo.

Jorginho was also given first place in the marks by England manager Gareth Southgate, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and of course Italy captain Giorgio Chiellini.
