According to French paper L’Equipe, Marco Verrattti has turned down Luciano Spalletti’s Italy call-up for games against North Macedonia and Ukraine.

The PSG midfielder is on the verge of joining Qatari side Al-Arabi on a permanent transfer. He is expected to undergo his medical on Tuesday.

According to L’Equipe, Verratti turned down Spalletti’s call-up for games in September. The Italian midfielder has not played under Luis Enrique and wad been left out of PSG’s Champions League list.

Spalletti had justified Verratti’s absence from Italy’s squad with his lack of playing time in the opening stage of the campaign.

“We are at the beginning of the season, so not everyone has been playing consistently. For this reason, I didn’t call two players like Verratti or Jorginho,” Spalletti said at his unveiling press conference on September 2.

The 64-year-old coach will address the media again on Monday in a pre-match press conference on the eve of Tuesday’s game against Ukraine at San Siro.
