US hedge fund Elliott now effectively run the club after President Yonghong Li defaulted on his debts, but a new Board of Directors will only be voted in after July 21.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the new patrons have approached Leonardo to ask if he would be interested in a new role.

The Brazilian speaks several languages fluently and has experience in various areas of the sport, as director at Milan and Paris Saint-Germain, Coach with the Rossoneri and their rivals Inter.

Another former player, Maldini, had originally been contacted for a position within the new board.

However, multiple sources suggest he turned them down because the role was largely a ceremonial one and he wanted to have some say in the way the club was run.

Leonardo is an icon from his playing days at Milan, but also brings experience of management that Maldini does not have.

Current CEO Marco Fassone and director of sport Massimiliano Mirabelli could remain at Milan, but in less important positions.
