Uruguay international Mauricio Lemos explains why he left Las Palmas for Sassuolo. “Serie A is the perfect place for a defender to improve.”

The 22-year-old centre-back was a surprise January signing, as he also fielded offers from other European clubs, including Genoa.

“I come here to grow and improve. I no longer felt at ease in Spain and had to take this opportunity to sign for Sassuolo, as Serie A is the perfect place for a defender to improve,” said Lemos in his presentation Press conference.

“I am a defender who likes to play the ball, so I can have my say in the opposition penalty area too. This is a fascinating challenge for me.

“Coach Beppe Iachini already explained what he wants from his defenders and it’s up to me to give my best. There are so many great defenders in Serie A, for example Giorgio Chiellini, but my personal inspiration is fellow Uruguayan Diego Godin.

“Clearly, in Italian football there is more tactical work in training and I know it’ll take a little time, but I am settling in well. The team gave me a warm welcome.

“If I can get regular playing time, then I can aspire to a World Cup place with Uruguay.”
