Lucas Leiva sent a message thanking Lazio fans after he underwent knee surgery, which should keep him out for a month. “I took this moment to fix something that was no longer working.”
The Brazilian had been struggling with a recurring inflammation in his right knee for some time and took the opportunity of the lockdown to have the operation.
It cleaned up fragments around the meniscus and cartilage, so he is expected to be out for a month.

“In life we must always think of moving forward, but at times a strategic pause helps you reflect and sort things out,” wrote Leiva on his Instagram page.
“I took this moment to fix something that was no longer working for me. Now I begin the second phase, which consists of getting in physical shape so I can return with maximum strength.
“Peace of mind helps the body react better in the rehabilitation process. I will be back soon. Thank you for the messages of support.”
It’s entirely possible that by the time Italian football does resume, Lucas Leiva will be fully recovered, as the provisional date floated for fixtures is May 20.
