After reports that Rennes were close to securing Bologna defender Arthur Theate, it is now claimed that Leicester City are in the running too.

The 22-year-old Belgium international impressed in his debut Serie A season, arriving on loan with option to buy from KV Oostende for €6m.

He made 31 Serie A appearances, scoring two goals and providing one assist, as well as proving himself adept in different defensive formations.

His stay in Italy may well be short-lived, as there were reports yesterday that Stade Rennais were on the verge of completing a swoop at a cost of €18m including add-ons.

Now Sportitalia transfer expert Alfredo Pedullà warns that Leicester City are also in the running for Theate and ready to either match or even improve upon that offer.

Rennes have been looking for a new defender all summer, pipped to the post for Fenerbahce star Kim Min-jae by Napoli in a deal worth €20m.
