Lecce’s hopes of staying in Serie A have taken a blow as Alessandro Deiola and Marco Calderoni could miss the rest of the season.

A medical report on Lecce’s official website confirms Deiola [pictured] will undergo surgery after encountering ‘persistent pain’ in his left knee.

As for Calderoni, the left-back has picked up a hamstring injury in his left thigh.

Deiola arrived on loan from Cagliari in January and went straight into the Salentini’s first team, making eight starts.

Deiola arrived on loan from Cagliari in January and went straight into the Salentini’s first team, making eight starts.

However, knee problems have limited the midfielder to just 34 minutes of football since the restart.

Calderoni, meanwhile, has been Lecce’s starting left-back this season with three goals and two assists in 26 appearances.

Fabio Liverani’s side are only one point adrift of safety with five rounds of fixtures remaining, but Genoa have a game in hand on them.

The two sides lock horns on Sunday, in what promises to be a real six-pointer.
